Flowers ready to go with Gemma

Easter is my favourite time of year.  As I started to realise the impact of social distancing restrictions, I thought about how it would affect my plans for Easter; a time when I would normally enjoy handing out flowers and chocolate eggs to my friends and family.

A week before Easter, I sent a message to Fr Kevin asking for his thoughts about an idea I’d had, to place Easter flowers and prayers cards on the corners of  local streets, for passers-by to take as a gift on Easter Sunday. His response was: “Great idea, go for it!” Having had the go-ahead from Fr. Kevin, I contacted Helen Jones, Pastoral Associate for the Liverpool South Pastoral Area, who encouraged me to take the project forward and organised for it to be publicised on BBC Radio Merseyside’s ‘Making a Difference’ slot – thank you Helen!

I’d also like to thank my Fiancé, Carl, who helped me with the type-setting of the prayer cards, fixing printer problems, laminating, and collecting the flowers that were kindly donated by Tesco on Mather Avenue.

Carl and I were pleased to see that most of the flowers and cards had already been collected before we’d even finished distributing the gifts to the four locations on Penny Lane, Dovedale Road, Queens Drive and Calderstones Park.  I think we’ll need more flowers and prayer cards next year!  I hope they brought some cheer to people who needed it and maybe even inspired others to put their own community projects into action!

If anyone would like to help me run this Easter project again, or can suggest local suppliers who would be willing to donate flowers, please get in touch with Helen Jones: h.jones@rcaol.org.uk
