Under current restrictions it is not possible to celebrate a Funeral Mass in a church building and Bishop Malone’s body will not be taken to the Cathedral.

In line with the restrictions Bishop Malone’s funeral will be a private graveside service.

The Roman Catholic Church has a centuries old tradition of offering Mass for those who have died, and in these days many such Masses have been livestreamed from churches throughout the country for the families of those unable to be taken to church.

Bishop Vincent Malone served as Auxiliary Bishop of Liverpool from 1989 until his retirement in 2006.  He died on Monday 18 May, aged 88.
